Common symptoms

  • Applications quit unexpectedly
  • Apps become unresponsive (spinning beach ball)
  • Force quit required to close applications
  • Error messages when launching apps

Possible causes

  • Corrupted application preferences
  • Insufficient system resources
  • Conflicting software
  • Outdated application versions

Step-by-step solution

  1. Force Quit Unresponsive Applications

Properly close frozen or unresponsive applications

Press Command + Option + Esc
    Select the unresponsive application
    Click "Force Quit"

Note: You can also press Command + Q to quit normally first

  2. Update the Application

Check for and install application updates

    Open App Store
    Click "Updates" tab
    Install available updates
For non-App Store apps, check the app's Help menu for updates

Note: Many crashes are fixed in newer versions

  3. Clear Application Preferences

Reset app preferences to fix corruption issues

    Quit the application completely
Open Finder and press Command + Shift + G
    Type "~/Library/Preferences"
Find and trash preference files for the problematic app
    Restart the application

Warning: This will reset all app settings to defaults

  4. Check System Resources

Ensure your Mac has sufficient memory and storage

Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities
Check "Memory" tab for memory pressure
Quit other applications if memory is full

Note: Red memory pressure indicates insufficient RAM

  5. Restart in Safe Mode

Test if the app works in Safe Mode to isolate issues

    Shut down your Mac
Press power button and immediately hold Shift
Release Shift when you see login screen
    Test the problematic application

Note: Safe Mode loads only essential system extensions
